Digital Theatre+ announces major new content partnership with BBC Active

 In Press Releases

The rapidly growing education platform is more than doubling the collection of education and video content that will be available in the library by the start of the 2017 academic year.

Over the coming months, 70 new titles from the extensive BBC archives will become available to Digital Theatre+’s customers across the globe, spanning over 30 years of recorded British theatre and theatrical commentary.

From the origins of western theatre in Ancient Greece, with Sophocles’ Theban Plays, through Shakespeare, Webster, Ibsen, Wilde and beyond, the BBC Active partnership will enable Digital Theatre+ to guide students and teachers across the world through an extensive and comprehensive theatrical history.

Digital Theatre+ subscribers across Europe, Asia, South America and Africa will have access to the full BBC Shakespeare Collection, featuring performances from the likes of Helen Mirren, Anthony Hopkins, Alan Rickman, Felicity Kendall and John Gielgud, along with David Tennant and Patrick Stewart’s iconic Hamlet. The library incorporates a wealth of supporting documentaries, drawing on the expertise of Trevor Nunn, Simon Schama and Francesco Da Mosto, among others, as well as bringing a breadth of world theatre to the platform, from Beckett to Sophocles.

“We are delighted to be able to welcome the BBC titles to the Digital Theatre family and make their world-class content accessible to our millions of school, college and university subscribers around the world. They join other world-class arts organisations such as the RSC, The Globe, Royal Opera House, LSO and English National Ballet” commented Digital Theatre’s Co-founder, Robert Delamere.

DT+ aims to expand the relationship to include audio alongside video productions as we curate further content across the UK and International Baccalaureate Drama and Theatre Studies curricula. The evolution will bring unprecedented access to performance and theatrical insights to millions of pupils.

Jeremy Wilcox from BBC Active expressed his delight at announcing the Digital Theatre+ partnership, “this is a fantastic opportunity to make the BBC’s content accessible to over 3 million teachers and students from 1000 institutions in 55 countries.”

As Digital Theatre+ pushes to expand theatrical engagement across the globe, the platform is constantly working to extend the relevance and accessibility of its content. An exclusive new capture of Sherman Theatre’s Iphigenia in Splott brings syllabus playwright Gary Owen’s Cardiffian appropriation of a classical tale of state, sacrifice and suppression to the classroom, while the 10by10 short film series, in association with Britain’s leading black-led national touring company, Eclipse Theatre, takes us beyond the conventions of the stage. Digital Theatre + is further committed to having all original content fully captioned by the year’s end.
